It’s That Time Of Year Again

If you are reading this on the day that it posts, there are only two days until my birthday.1

This is not necessarily a good thing. I have contentious relationship with my birthday. For many years,
2 my birthday was one of the days3 that I would look back and examine what a total fuck up I was. On NYE, it was just looking back at the past year, but my birthday was worse. I got to look back at my whole life and pick apart every mistake, every bad choice, and every missed opportunity.

Naturally, this made me...less than pleasant to be around.

To avoid being a total and complete asshole around the people that I cared for, I would spend the week before my birthday camping by myself. The good news was that I got to see some lovely scenery. The better news was that I didn’t make anyone (like my wife) want to kill me.

Fortunately, I have been able to shed this habit in recent years.
4 In fact, I have had some really great experiences around my birthday. I thought I would take a moment to look back on some of the highlights.5

The Mrs loves surprises.
6 Over the years, she has planned some really great ones. These have included beautiful nature hikes, picnics, and a horse riding excursion.

While I am not one for parties, we have had some good get togethers with friends and family. From restaurants to pool halls, there have been a lot of laughs had around the end of July.

In normal years, we’re smack in the middle of Con Season. What better way is there to spend a day than with the wonderful writers of the

Two years ago,
The Cranbrook Institute had an exhibit entitled Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die: Punk Graphics, 1976 - 1986 which was an amazing walk down my personal musical memory lane.

The Redford Theatre has had some great movies around my birthday. We’ve celebrated while watching Star Trek II:The Wrath of Kahn, Alien, and Princess Bride, all in the beautiful setting of a classic movie house.

The Henry Ford Museum7 had a Star Trek exhibit last year and a Marvel Universe exhibit this year. Unfortunately, I didn’t snag tickets early enough to attend on my actual birthday, but I will definitely go there before the exhibit leaves.

So, if I’m not going to hang out with Dr. Strange and Spiderman, what am I going to do? Well, I’ll probably hang around the house with The Mrs and the dogs. If it is nice enough outside, I might even sit outside with a book. In the evening, I will be driving out to the
Historic Howell Theater which is hosting a drive-in theater in the parking lot. This weekend’s selection is my all time favorite Universal Movie Monster: The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

So that’s where I’ll be and what I will be doing. I hope you enjoy your day as much as I plan to enjoy mine.

1 Don’t waste the money on Express Shipping. It’s OK if your presents are a little late.

2 Most of my life really.

3 The other was New Year’s Eve.

4 Although I
do miss camping.

5 Full disclosure, it has been a really crappy week. It feels like the world is falling apart, both in the larger and more personal sense. I originally started this as a way to look for silver linings. Between FB’s Memories and photos, I realized that I’ve been really lucky regarding events that happened around my birthday.

6 Honestly, I’m not a big fan.

7 Yes, I know that they want to be called
The Henry Ford. And Hillbillies want to be called Sons of the Soil, but it ain’t going to happen.
