A Month of Horror: Day 14

14 October

Movie: Dawn of the Dead (1978/2004)
Book:
The Serpent and the Rainbow

I'm cheating a little bit here, but I think that both versions of DotD have merit. Both follow similar plots -- a group of survivors holed up in a shopping mall beset by zombies. The original focuses on the three survivors as they go from the wonder and happiness of having everything they could want at their fingertips to the drudgery of everyday survival.
1 The remake has a larger group trying to find a way to get along with each other, eventually realizing that they will have to leave their shelter for better digs.2

The Serpent and the Rainbow is the haunting true story of a man who goes to Haiti to uncover the truth about zombies3 and gets way more than he had originally hoped for. Without giving too much away, let's just say that he gets a first hand look at the creation of a zombie. The book was later made into an equally creepy movie (bonus thing for you).

1. And there's a biker pie fight.

2. And there's a horrible birthing scene.

3. This is way before the current resurgence in popularity.
